Some, with time on their hands, might wonder if there was any particular reason we picked Tucumcari, New Mexico for our overnight. The answer is yes. Way back when, not long after Greg and I were married, we drove from Nashville to Colorado. Even then enjoying a good road trip, we decided to cut through New Mexico on our return. Happenstance led us, that time, to Tucumcari, where stopped at a diner and had what in our mind, is still, quite possibly, the world’s best breakfast burrito. Now when you are hot, hungry and tired, things might take on an exaggerated quality. Like that bug that bit me that had fangs! I digress. This famous breakfast burrito has been in our memories for decades. Three years ago, Greg and Elizabeth stopped in Tucumcari specifically to see if they could find the same place. They did—and Greg made a pretty fun little video about it.
Today, of course, we had to get up at 5:00am so we could be at the restaurant—Kix on 66—right when they opened at 6am so we could get, again, the breakfast burrito. Well, Greg and I did. Ryan and Audrey had pancakes. The food was still delicious.
We also read another story about how Tucumcari got its name. Chief Wautonomah (same Chief), when he was a young brave, was best friends with another young brave, Tocom. Young Wautonomah took a bride. Tocom was best brave. Over time, the Chief’s love, and his bride, grew. Each year, the tribe would cross the river when the waters rose. The braves would carry their brides on their backs to safety. Chief Wautonomah took his bride and started crossing the river. Half way across, the “inevitable” happened—his knees started to buckle, his eyeballs bulged, his back started giving way, and the water was rising to his mouth threatening to cut off his air. What was the Chief to do? Over the rushing water a scream rang out to his friend, “TOCOM CARRRYYY!”
Remember, I didn’t write it!
Not so much else to report today, as we had one of 2 VERY long drive days, stopping in Las Vegas, Nevada. Good sleep, All!
