Rollin' Down the Highway

Driving day. Today we moved from Arizona back to New Mexico. We need to head East, and Gillian hadn’t been to New Mexico yet. Today’s destination was Alamagordo. A couple of thoughts that came up today.

First, we saw this very unusual cloud formation near Flagstaff. Turns out these were the clouds from the arsonist who started the fire at the Pipeline. There were also at least 2 additional wildfires going in AZ, not contained as of today. Making these fires even more dangerous and difficult are very high winds. I had no idea, but there is a monsoon season in Arizona! The high winds usually precede the rainy season, but for these past couple of years there are been little to no rain, only the winds. I’m not sure how best to describe them. You could easily fly a kite, but you’d better have a strong string and a good grip.

And a word about the heat. Yes, it’s hot. Very hot. So hot it sucks the moisture right out of and off your body. My hair can not keep a curl. They just wilt. There is no heat index. It just is that temperature. We are actually just as hot, and sometimes hotter, in TN. We just are instantly covered in sweat when we open the door back home. This “dry heat” reminds me of what it feels like to reach inside the oven.

Oh, we are in Billy the Kid country; the sign said so.

Another warning sign: Do not pick up hitchhikers, we are near prison facilities.

And…Audrey has killed all our cows and we have to start again...
