Our last full day in Italy. We had the bulk of the day to use at our discretion. We opted to start by visiting the Museo Correr. Thankfully, the tickets Arianna secured for us were good for several museums in and around Venice. Actually, we couldn’t get to all of the locations, and they’re good for 6 months, so if anyone happens to be in Venice, let me know. ;) Anyway, this museum literally surrounds St. Mark’s square, and houses many paintings, sculptures, and artifacts. It really is difficult to be in Italy and not be surrounded by beautiful things. There were so many items to comment on, but I think it’s fun to note that every single one of us independently commented on and/or took a picture of the enormous foot comparing it to Greg’s foot.
We picked a restaurant off a square for lunch and people watched, and did a little bit more shopping. Dropped the bags at the hotel, and then it was off to St. Mark’s Basilica to view the interior. If you are interested in seeing inside, it is well worth the 6 euro tickets and the MUCH shorter line, versus the 3 euro tickets and waiting in the line around the basilica. Elizabeth and Greg paid the extra, extra and went up to the upper level, too. Finally, it was time for our much anticipated gondola ride. We’ve been extremely fortunate with the weather these past 10 days, and the rain finally caught us about half way through, but it was pretty light, so quite manageable. We rode out the canal system getting to see the Venetian architecture from a different vantage point. We made it out and onto the Grand Canal, viewing the Rialto Bridge, and then back. If you happened to read about our Southwest adventure last summer, this gondola ride was a very different experience than the one inside the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas! There are over 200 canals in Venice. A nice way to slow down in a city that is over 1600 years old.
We ended our evening with dinner by the canal, gelato, and cappuccino. Repacked and ready for a 4 am wake up call to start a long day back to Tennessee.
