Today felt more like the first day of vacation. While the focus was still driving day 2, Oklahoma to Tucumcari, New Mexico, we arrived before dark and were able to go for a nice dinner, take some pictures, and explore the campsite a bit.
Fun things of note:
We stopped and tried a Braums for lunch. Burgers and ice-cream. They really do have a whole lot of ice cream flavors. We were behind a church group of 26 people headed home to New Mexico. One register. They were lovely people, though.
We are stopped in Tucumcari, New Mexico, off the famous Route 66.
We ate dinner at Dells. Dells is celebrating it’s 66th year in business (and is, off Route 66). Our lovely waitress has been working at Dells for 33 years.
We can see Tucumcari Mountain from our campsite. There is an Indian legend about it. Tragic, with all main characters dying, and the chief calling out the names of his daughter (Kari) and her love (Tocum)-- with his dying breath, “Tocum- Kari”.
You can find a replacement sewer hose at Tractor Supply Company. TSC is always there for us!
And currently, what might be my favorite new thing today, when the sun is setting here in NM, trantulas pop out of all these holes in the ground. Ryan was the one to spot the first one. Then you notice how many holes there actually are around you! As the infallible Wikipedia reports, “The Texas brown tarantula is one of the most common species of tarantula living in the Southern US today. Texas brown tarantulas can grow to leg spans in excess of 4 inches, and weigh more than 3 oz as adults.”
They seem non-aggressive to me, but I am NOT wearing my flip flops to walk Kevin tonight, and I AM taking a flashlight. Tomorrow—a special morning planned in Tucumcari, then a long drive day to Nevada.
And—Ryan also found a snake. Maybe I’ll just wear boots.
