So to vacation or not to vacation as we start to enter a post pandemic era where masks mandates are somewhat vague, vaccinations are recommended, and the desire to see something besides our own house has grown? This summer of 2021, we were supposed to be in Italy celebrating Gillian’s high school graduation. Pandemic international travel still seems somewhat risky (riskier than ‘regular’ international travel!), so we have chosen a domestic adventure instead. Hence, this summer’s great adventure, THE MID ATLANTIC STATES! Fanfare and accolades, please.
Those of you related to us probably remember that when we purchased our first RV we set an unofficial goal of visiting all 48 contiguous lower states of the USA before Audrey leaves for college. An ambitious goal. We also have the personal criteria that in order to “count” a state, we have to spend a minimum of one night there in the RV AND see “something” of note. It can be the world’s largest prairie dog, or Yellowstone—just something fun. The Mid Atlantic is an area that we’ve been through several times, but we’ve never targeted it as a DESTINATION for VACATION. Full disclosure, I can not honestly say we do these travels as vacations. They are trips. There is definitely an agenda. Oh well! So much to see and so little time! And time is particularly limited this year since Gillian is in a show in Nashville, and we only have a brief window of opportunity to move about the country.
We are off with a very inglorious departure. Initial planning to leave by lunch on Thursday, June 24th, our beloved Simon (the 14 year old Siamese cat) presented with an eye problem. There was no way we could leave with him not well, so we went to the vet first. It appears as though he has the onset of glaucoma, so Simon is boarding for the duration of our vacation. That way, we know he will get the medication and monitoring he needs multiple times a day. We love our Simon so much! He is one of those cats that makes people who think they don’t like cats reconsider.
So, vet visit completed, and now late in the afternoon, we modified our plan and knocked off just a few hours of the trip, stopping for a few hours of sleep in Lexington, KY. Not expecting any excitement during this overnight, but watching Greg park the RV between the pedestal for the electric and the very large Oak tree was enough to start the adrenaline pumping! Breakfast and lunch in the RV on Friday, June 25th saw us through for one of our longest scheduled drives as we headed into New York (state). Destination 1—Chautauqua Lake in DeWittville, NY. Why here? You’ll see tomorrow.
