This trip through the Mid Atlantic in a week means that we have a typical pattern of drive day, do day, drive day, do day. Sunday being, of course, a drive day. Despite any protestations, I do also try to balance “doing” with “HAVING to get up and go”. Today’s goal was to move from Western New York state to central Pennsylvania. Destination—Hershey, PA.
The countryside was absolutely beautiful, and we managed to stay on RV friendly roads. Greg was a bit concerned about one cut through, but (obviously) it turned out ok, because we made it. Steepest down grade today was 11%. I did suggest we just coast down, as Greg likes a good roller-coaster, but apparently driving the RV down a small mountain is not the same experience (shrug). 11% still doesn’t give us a new personal record. That grade was 15% crossing the Teatons into Wyoming. And, yes, I would absolutely do that again. Without a doubt, one of my favorite parts of the country.
One of the things I hope we’ve impressed upon the kids as they’ve grown up, is that your attitude about things will affect the outcome. If you look for the good, the fun, the positive, you can find it. If you expect to be miserable, you will be. Even on the worst days, and we all have them, you can find something that makes you happy. It might be a tiny little something—seeing a wild strawberry, a shape in a potato chip, that Kevin licked Gillian in the face—or giant big news—a new job, an A exam, kittens. Ryan and I found some hidden happys at the RV park. We walked Kevin around the perimeter-- a long way for Kevin. (I really want to attach a pedometer to Kevin to see how many steps he takes each day.) We are next to a pretty nice creek complete with canoe entrance, and Ryan spotted a neat beetle, huge and black. It was a bit worse for wear but making its way to the tree line. Anyway, safely tucked into our PA stopping point, turns out we had time for a bonus—dinner with the cousins and Granny! Having moved to Lititz during the pandemic, they were happy to drive up and meet us for a meal. Much joy ensured, as we haven’t been able to see them in person for months and months (thank you, Covid). Needless to say, we will maximize this time near each other with tomorrow’s PA adventure. No spoilers, but I bet you have a pretty good idea what we will be doing!
